Statutory Requirements: Per Florida Statutes § 316.2065, a person on a bike on a sidewalk has all the rights and duties of a pedestrian, but must, per Florida Law, yield to pedestrians and provide an audible signal.

Take The Pledge

Use Your Words

As a responsible and respectful biker who uses the sidewalks of Marco Island, I pledge:

  • To make safety and courtesy my “job one” when biking

  • To operate my bike at a speed at a safe and responsible speed – no more that twice the speed of the walkers or runners I overtake.

  • I acknowledge that when overtaking a walker or runner, I have the requirement to keep clear and pass in a safe manner.

  • I commit to “Using my words” – by using my voice to announce that I am about to overtake a walker or runner – loudly and well in advance of my near approach.

  • I will use a phrase that alerts walkers or runners and gives them a clue to the “safe zone”.  Such as:
    • “Good morning!   Passing on your right (or left)”
    • “Bike Passing.   On your right (or left)”
